Update on Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act
Negotiations commenced last week in the Congressional conference committee charged with reconciling the House and Senate versions of H.R.4173, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
A contentious debate is underway on the standards of care issue between House and Senate conferees. House Chairman Frank and the Obama Administration strongly support a uniform fiduciary standard of care for all brokers, dealers and investment advisors while Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Republicans are backing the NAILBA-supported Senate approach, which commissions a 12-month study (conducted by the SEC) of the standards of care used by brokers, dealers and investment advisors. A final decision on the matter could be made as soon as this week.
Congress and the Administration hope to have a final bill passed by the July 4 recess.
Please contact Mark Valentini at 703-383-3073 or mvalentini@nailba.org with questions about NAILBA's government affairs efforts.
